About Author LaTaeya Lane

Years of exposure within the writing and publishing world have made a lasting impact on Author LaTaeya Lane. Writing since she was seven years old, Lane began jotting down phrases and themes later turning them into poems and short stories. As our lips met, the search for our security began. Neither of us wanted to believe that we could lose this. Running my fingers through his hair, I gripped his neck with my other hand. I didn’t want this closeness to end. The firmness of his body stretched along mine as he lifted me into his arms. I wrapped my legs around his waist, not wanting to detach from his kisses as they led away from my mouth down my neck. Feeling his breath dance across my skin as he kissed my collarbone brought a shivery delight to my senses. The softness of his lips was such a contrast to the firmness of his grasp as he guided his hands down my back.
He spun around, pinning me up against the tree with his weight, as I let my mind wander to what might be waiting for me next. My breathing got faster with each second of anticipation. He slowly brought my chin up and his lips began exploring mine once more. With every kiss, his mouth pressed harder along mine, and my heart exploded with curiosity. I let my hands find their way back to his neck up to his hair, twisting and pulling him closer to me with all of my strength.
He pulled away slightly, and I opened my eyes to see him searching my expression for something. For what, I wasn’t sure.
“I don’t ever want to lose you, Triss.” Logan shook his head. “I couldn’t—”
“Shh.” I placed my index finger to his lips. “You won’t.”
My hand trailed down his chest to the first button that I attempted to unfasten.

(Mid)Chapter 1
I went for my earplugs and scrolled through the rock playlist on my iPod, eager to listen to the intoxicating sound of Elysion. The band’s music twisted my heart in every way possible; they restrained me from thinking of anything else but the singer’s haunting voice and the possessing lyrics in Far From the Edge, one of my favorites. But before I could press play mom ambushed me with another sincerity speech.

“You can hide underneath that mask all you want but sooner or later you’re going to open those pretty little green eyes and realize you don’t really want to be alone.”
The car went silent. I blasted the song in my ears and turned back towards the window to take in the scenery while considering what she said. Mom was right. I don’t want to be alone. But I don’t know if I want to connect with anyone either. Not with the issue I’ve been having.

The same night of Sean’s death I told my parents everything, the absolute truth. But they looked at me and at each other as if I’d been severely disturbed by the ordeal. Dad made sure we went to therapy as a family, and for each session I had to lie that there was never any bright lights, nor was my hand ever on fire. I lied to keep myself from getting institutionalized.

I shook the memory away and started to blow on the window, drawing tiny hearts unconsciously until something caught my eyes: Welcome to Stetson Valley!

Phoebe was too far away to sense whether the boy had one heart or two. Through the maze of trees with clattering leaves, she could see him moving with purposeful speed. He was headed toward her destination—a brownstone chapel perched at the top of a small hill. Not knowing the boy’s nature made Phoebe hesitate. Then came the sound of tower bells. Eight o’clock.
